CYE-CYL Summer Challenge 2019!

What is the CYE-CYL Summer Challenge?

CYE-CYL (“Change Your Energy, Change Your Life), pronounced as “cycle”, has just been launched in Gibraltar. We have created a programme for young people between 12 and 20. We provide the practical skills and self-empowerment tools needed to access employment and/or further education with confidence, drive and ambition.

For how long and when?

CYE-CYL Summer Challenge is 3-week  programme which will run during the summer holidays. The programme is divided into three phases:

  • Outdoor Challenge
  • Community Challenge
  • Business Challenge

Between the ages of 12 to 15? The Summer Challenge will run from the 5th to 24th August 2019

Between the ages of 16 to 20? The Summer Challenge will from the 8th to 27th July 2019

The Experience...

We aim to provide a balance of fun and hard-work - more than that we aim to make the work fun throughout the programme. Of course, nothing comes without its challenges! In any case, there will be programme leaders and senior mentors to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all.

The variety of experiences- from outdoor activities in the summer, acquiring life-long skills, making a difference within the community, creating memories with friends, old and new- will be an experience to cherish.

If completed successfully, participants will be invited to a graduation ceremony attended by families, friend and local dignitaries to celebrate and recognize all that has been accomplished during the programme. You will receive a training certificate signed by the Chief Minister of Gibraltar that can be used when applying for jobs or further education.

Breaking it down for you

(residential) During week 1 of the programme young people work together and get active- staying at a residential centre and taking part in a range of outdoor activities like abseiling, kayaking, hiking, rock-climbing and more.

(non-residential)  a chance for you to learn more about photography, media, drama or sports.  Using this skill, you will get a chance to create a project for a charity or community partner of your choice.

(non-residential)  Bring out the inner entrepreneur. You and your team will work with a business partner to raise funds for a community or charity partner of your choice. Use your creativity to earn the bucks!

£50! We cover the rest! The amount you pay will go towards paying for the residential week, the staff and the various activities throughout the 3-week programme.

  What is mindfulness actually about?

Mindfulness allows oneself to focus on the present moment without being distracted by thoughts of the past or worries about the future. This is done through a series of breathing exercises, reflective sessions and relaxation techniques. Having derived from Asian-Zen teachings, mindfulness has been used throughout the ages to relieve stress and improve overall well-being.

How will self-empowerment and mindfulness help young people that join the summer programme?

Self-empowerment workshops will facilitate opportunities for reflection, contemplation and enable young people to discover their higher potential. Each one has a unique story to their life. CYE-CYL wants to support young people to become confident, driven & ambitious & free from low self-esteem, self-doubt or negative self-perceptions. We could all do with a bit of self-love!

The programme is not just the 3-4 weeks but much more.

Once participants have graduated from the programme, CYE-CYL will work closely with partner organisations to support young people enter employment and/or internship opportunities.

We will also support participants looking to continue into further education. Your experiences during the CYE-CYL Summer Challenge will be useful to include in your personal statements.

We will create regular meet-ups for young people that will have become part of the CYE-CYL community. Here, participants will be able to:

  • Identify new ways of supporting the local community
  • Partner with other charities and volunteer abroad
  • Benefit from the informal conversations with invited speakers
  • Sustain meaningful friendships for years to come.
